This is just a step in letting our elected officials know that we are watching and want to see a peaceful and prosperous Congo. By sending messages to their sites we can also educate others who follow them. The more people who know the better – spread the word!
President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cosponsored The Democratic Republic of the Congo Relief, Security, and Democracy Promotion Act of 2006 – United States Public Law #109-456. (See link for highlights and full text of the law) They pushed for this bill’s implementation during the Bush administration but have failed to act now that they are in power. Let them know that you want to see this law enforced so that peace may come to the Congo. A major point of concern is the intervention of U.S. ally, Rwanda, in the Congo. Although the U.S. recently decided to halt $200,000 in foreign military financing, more should be done diplomatically, politically and economically to ensure that those who have perpetrated violence are held to account as well as entities who are exploiting resources. It is a matter of law that our involvement with the Congo be proactive and consistent until the region is stable and unfortunately this has not been the case. We can do better. We must do better. YES WE CAN!
